New Ownership Sparks a Turnaround at a Longtime Cape Girardeau Salon

When longtime hairstylist Odalys Ferreira took over Broadway Row Salon in downtown Cape Girardeau last year, she inherited more than a client list. She inherited three decades of habits, some worth keeping and plenty that needed to change, built up under the salon's previous owner, who had run the business since the early 1990s before retiring.
"I loved this salon as a stylist working under Carol for six years," Ferreira said, referring to the salon's founder. "But when I bought it, I realized I was going to have to be honest with myself about what needed to modernize, even things that had worked fine for a long time."
Modernizing Without Losing the Client Base
Ferreira's first move was overhauling the salon's booking system, replacing a paper appointment book with online scheduling, a change she said some longtime clients initially resisted but that ultimately reduced no-show rates significantly within the first few months.
She also restructured how stylists were compensated, moving from a straight hourly wage to a commission-based model designed to reward stylists for building their own clientele, a shift that required delicate conversations with staff who had worked under the old system for years.
"Change is hard, especially when people are comfortable," said senior stylist Odell Brennan, who has worked at Broadway Row for eleven years, spanning both ownership eras. "But Odalys was transparent about why she was making each change, and honestly, most of it has made the job better, not harder."
Investing in Staff Development
Where Ferreira has invested most heavily is continuing education. Under the previous ownership, formal training was largely left to individual stylists to pursue and fund on their own. Ferreira now covers the cost of at least one advanced certification course per year for every stylist on staff, along with monthly in-house workshops on current color and cutting techniques.
"Cape Girardeau doesn't always get the same access to trend-forward training that stylists in bigger cities take for granted," Ferreira said. "I wanted to close that gap so our team isn't behind just because of where we're located."
The investment appears to be paying off. Broadway Row has added two new stylist positions since the ownership change and reports a client retention rate Ferreira says is notably higher than it was under the salon's previous booking and service structure.
Honoring the Salon's History
Despite the operational changes, Ferreira has been careful to preserve elements of the salon's identity that longtime clients cherish, including the exposed brick interior original to the building and a wall of photographs documenting decades of client transformations that Carol had displayed for years.
"This salon means something to this block," Ferreira said. "People have been coming here since before I was old enough to hold scissors. I didn't want to walk in and erase that just because I had new ideas."
A Model for Small-Business Succession
Local business mentor Priscilla Yates, who advised Ferreira through the ownership transition, said Broadway Row's story reflects a broader challenge facing small salons across smaller Missouri cities, where many longtime owners are approaching retirement without a clear succession plan.
"Odalys did something a lot of businesses struggle with," Yates said. "She respected what came before her while still being willing to modernize where it mattered. That balance is rare, and it's usually what determines whether a legacy business survives a transition or quietly closes."
Ferreira said her focus now is stability. "I'm not trying to turn this into something unrecognizable," she said. "I just want it to still be here in another thirty years."
