In a bright, plant-filled studio just off Central Avenue in Clayton, Noor Delacroix spends the first ten minutes of nearly every client consultation not talking about products, but asking questions: How's your sleep? Has your stress level changed recently? Any new medications? It's a line of questioning more reminiscent of a physician's intake form than a typical facial appointment, and it's central to how Delacroix built Halcyon Skin Studio into one of Clayton's most requested skincare practices.
"Skin is basically a readout of what's happening in the rest of the body," Delacroix said. "If I just treat what I see on the surface without asking about the rest, I'm guessing. I don't want to guess with someone's skin."
Rejecting the One-Treatment Fix
Delacroix, who trained as a licensed esthetician before completing additional certifications in advanced chemical peels and microneedling, has built Halcyon's approach around multi-session treatment plans rather than single dramatic procedures. New clients typically leave their first appointment not with a single treatment, but with a customized plan spanning several weeks or months.
"There's a real temptation in this industry to sell people on the treatment that sounds the most impressive," Delacroix said. "But skin health is cumulative. A single aggressive peel might look dramatic immediately, but it can also set someone back if their skin barrier wasn't ready for it. I'd rather build results slowly and safely."
That philosophy has meant turning away some prospective clients seeking quick, single-session transformations before major events, a trade-off Delacroix said has cost some short-term business but built long-term trust.
Educating Clients on At-Home Routines
Halcyon places heavy emphasis on what clients do between appointments. Delacroix reviews each client's at-home skincare routine in detail, often recommending they simplify products rather than add more, a message she said runs counter to a lot of skincare marketing.
"People come in with nine-step routines and irritated skin, and I have to talk them into using fewer products, not more," Delacroix said. "There's a lot of noise out there telling people they need the newest serum. Sometimes what skin actually needs is less interference and more consistency."
Client Aditi Basra, who has been seeing Delacroix for two years to manage rosacea-prone skin, said the individualized approach made a noticeable difference after years of trying products recommended by friends or influencers with different skin types. "She actually explains why something will or won't work for my specific skin," Basra said. "It's the first time skincare has actually felt tailored to me instead of generic."
Building a Reputation Through Word of Mouth
Delacroix has resisted heavy social media marketing, relying instead on client referrals and relationships built with local dermatologists who send patients needing cosmetic, non-medical skincare support. She said roughly a third of Halcyon's current client base arrived through a referral from a dermatology practice in the Clayton or Central West End area.
"I'd rather grow slowly with the right clients than grow fast with people who are going to be disappointed because they wanted an overnight transformation," Delacroix said.
What Comes Next
Delacroix is currently developing a series of educational workshops for clients on ingredient literacy, aiming to help people evaluate skincare marketing claims more critically. "My biggest goal isn't just good skin for my clients," she said. "It's helping people trust their own judgment about what their skin actually needs."
