At a logistics and technology firm headquartered in a Lee's Summit business park, Wednesday afternoons now include something that wasn't part of the schedule three years ago: a licensed massage therapist working out of a converted conference room, offering fifteen-minute chair massages to employees on a rotating sign-up sheet.
The program, run in partnership with a local wellness provider called Meridian Corporate Wellness, is one of a growing number of workplace wellness initiatives taking root among Lee's Summit employers, part of a broader regional response to persistent reports of employee burnout and rising healthcare costs tied to stress-related conditions.
From Perk to Retention Strategy
Meridian founder Talia Brandt started the company four years ago after working as an independent massage therapist and noticing a pattern among her corporate clients: consistent requests for on-site sessions from HR departments trying to differentiate their benefits packages in a competitive hiring market.
"It started as a couple of companies wanting something a little different for employee appreciation days," Brandt said. "Now we have several Lee's Summit employers with standing weekly or biweekly contracts. It's shifted from a one-time perk to something built into their retention strategy."
Meridian's offerings have expanded beyond massage to include guided meditation sessions, on-site yoga classes held in repurposed break rooms, and periodic wellness workshops covering topics like sleep hygiene and stress management, all delivered on client company premises during work hours.
Why Lee's Summit Employers Are Buying In
Human resources director Camille Osei, who oversees benefits for a mid-sized insurance firm in Lee's Summit that contracts with Meridian, said the decision was driven partly by data. Employee survey results showed persistent concerns about stress and limited time for self-care, concerns that traditional benefits like gym membership discounts hadn't meaningfully addressed.
"People don't use gym discounts if they don't have time to get to the gym," Osei said. "Bringing wellness services directly into the workday removes that barrier entirely. Participation has been far higher than anything we tried before."
Osei said the company has tracked a measurable uptick in employee engagement survey scores since introducing the program, though she was careful to note it's difficult to isolate wellness programming as the sole cause among several concurrent initiatives.
Instructor Perspective
Yoga instructor Desmond Ile, who leads a Tuesday lunchtime class for a Lee's Summit manufacturing company through the Meridian partnership, said corporate classes require a different approach than a typical studio session, with shorter time windows and participants of widely varying experience levels, often still in work clothes.
"You're not going to get someone into a full practice in thirty minutes over their lunch break," Ile said. "But even a short session, focused on breathing and gentle movement, makes a visible difference in how people carry themselves back to their desks."
A Trend With Staying Power
Brandt said she expects workplace wellness contracts to keep growing across the Lee's Summit business corridor, particularly as more employers compete for talent in a tight labor market where benefits packages have become a meaningful differentiator.
"Companies used to think of this as a nice-to-have," Brandt said. "Now it's coming up in exit interviews when it's missing. That tells you it's become an expectation, not a bonus."
